Our journey began with two remarkable women—Sharon’s mother and aunt, and Sarah’s grandmother and great aunt—who each spent their final years in assisted living and memory care. We spent time with them often, treasuring each visit. But as the days passed, a quiet heaviness began to settle in our hearts. All around us, we noticed the silent presence of loneliness—residents sitting alone in hallways, eating meals without company, and spending holidays without a friendly face or warm conversation.
As our visits continued, conversations with staff eventually began to reveal a more profound truth: many residents go days, weeks, even months without someone stopping by. Not because they weren’t loved, but because life, distance, or circumstance made visits rare. These beautiful souls had rich lives and stories that were going unheard. Their smiles came slowly. Their eyes often searched for someone to simply sit with them and listen.
That experience left a mark on us. It opened our eyes—and stirred our hearts. We couldn’t forget what we saw. We didn’t want to forget. What began as heartbreak grew into something bigger: a calling we couldn’t ignore.
Though we came from different professional backgrounds, we knew one thing for certain—we were meant to do something about it. And so, we took a leap of faith, stepping away from long-held careers to follow a deeper purpose. That purpose became MyFriend.
We created this nonprofit with a simple yet powerful mission: to ease loneliness and bring joy to the lives of senior adults. Through our free, volunteer-driven companion program and meaningful community outreach, we aim to offer what every person deserves—to feel seen, heard, and valued.
We believe friendship heals. That presence matters. That one hour of conversation can light up a day—and sometimes, a life. Our dream is to be an extension of family for those who need it most.
This isn’t just our story—it’s a movement of compassion and connection. And we invite you to join us. Let’s walk this path together, and help our golden friends feel the love, dignity, and belonging they so deeply deserve.
