Frequently Asked Questions
Friends of the Family Program
What is the Friends of the Family program?
The Friends of Family program connects trained volunteers with senior adults for regular, one-on-one visits that offer friendship, comfort, and meaningful connection.
Who can participate in the program?
The program is open to senior adults living in senior living communities, group homes, hospitals, or hospice care who would benefit from companionship. This program is currently offered in the Phoenix metropolitan area.
Is there a cost to participate?
No. Our Friends of the Family program is completely free to participants, thanks to generous donors and volunteers.
How often do volunteers visit?
Volunteers typically visit once a week for about 1.5 hours, with a weekly check-in phone call as well. Visit frequency may vary based on the participant's needs and availability.
What do volunteers do during visits?
Visits are personalized and may include conversation, playing games, sharing meals, reading, celebrating birthdays or holidays, prayer, or simply being a quiet, supportive presence.
Do volunteers provide medical care, personal services, or transportation?
No. Volunteers do not provide any medical care, personal care (such as bathing or dressing), or transportation. Their role is strictly to offer companionship.
How are volunteers matched with a senior?
Both volunteers and seniors complete a compatibility form that includes preferences such as age, gender, religious beliefs, hobbies, interests, special needs, and life experiences (e.g., military service) to help ensure a meaningful and comfortable match.
Will the same volunteer visit each time?
Yes. To build a genuine friendship, the same volunteer is assigned for each visit and check-in call. In rare cases—such as illness, travel, or scheduling conflicts—a substitute volunteer may step in temporarily.
Can I request a companion for a short-term need?
Yes. We offer temporary participation for seniors whose family members are temporarily unavailable or for those receiving short-term medical or end-of-life care.
Are volunteers background checked?
Yes. All volunteers are 18 or older, pass a background check, and receive training before being matched with a senior.
How do I refer a loved one?
You can complete our online inquiry form, and a team member will follow up with you to learn more and walk you through the next steps.

Can family members be involved in the process?
Absolutely. We work closely with families and care staff to ensure visits are meaningful and supportive. We welcome the opportunity to stay in regular communication with family members, including sharing visit updates, photos (with consent), and any helpful observations to keep you connected and informed.
Is this a faith-based program?
Our organization is rooted in Christian values, and volunteers are respectful of the spiritual beliefs and preferences of each participant.
Community Outreach Events
Who are these events for?
Our community outreach events are designed for senior adults who are aging at home and may benefit from connection, fellowship, and uplifting activities.
What kind of events do you host?
Events may include themed activities, holiday celebrations, light volunteering opportunities, and meaningful social time with other local seniors.
Is there a cost to attend?
Most of our events are free, thanks to the generosity of donors, volunteers, and community partners. Occasionally, a small fee may apply for larger events like holiday celebrations to help cover added costs.
Do I need to register to attend an event?
Yes, registration is required so that we can plan appropriately for food, seating, and activities.

Can family members or caregivers attend with a senior?
Absolutely. Companions, family members, or caregivers are welcome and encouraged to join unless the event is specifically marked as seniors-only.

How can I find out about upcoming events?
You can check our events page or subscribe to our email list to receive event announcements and updates.
Do you provide transportation to events?
We do our best to offer transportation based on need and availability, but it is not guaranteed and is offered on a first-come, first-served basis. A small transportation fee may apply in some cases.
Can I volunteer to help with these events?
Yes! Volunteers are essential to making these events possible. Visit our volunteer page to learn how you can help with setup, hospitality, activities, or cleanup.
