The Unexpected Blessings of Serving Others

Sometimes, the greatest gift of giving your time is what you receive in return.
When we think about volunteering, we often think about what we have to offer. Our time, our talents, our compassion, and our willingness to make a difference in someone else's life. We see a need and feel called to help, hoping that our presence might bring a little encouragement, comfort, or joy to another person.
But something beautiful often happens along the way. The very people we set out to bless end up blessing us in ways we never expected.
More Than an Act of Service
At MyFriend, we believe that some of the most meaningful acts of service are also the simplest. Sitting beside someone. Listening to a story they've told a hundred times. Sharing a laugh over a game of cards. Remembering a birthday. Holding a hand during a difficult moment.
These gestures may seem small, but to an older adult who has experienced loss, loneliness, or significant life changes, the consistent presence of someone who genuinely cares can mean more than we realize.
And for the person serving, those same moments can become something equally meaningful.
A weekly visit that begins as a volunteer commitment can gradually become a friendship you look forward to. The senior you once hoped to encourage may become someone whose wisdom inspires you, whose humor brightens your week, or whose resilience changes the way you see life's challenges.
You arrive hoping to make someone's day a little brighter, only to discover they've brightened yours, too.
Finding Joy in Unexpected Places
Serving older adults isn't always easy. Aging can bring difficult circumstances, including declining health, memory loss, grief, and the loss of independence. There may be visits filled with laughter and lively conversation, and others when simply sitting quietly beside someone is the most meaningful thing you can offer.
Yet even in the difficult moments, there can be extraordinary joy.
There's joy in watching someone's face light up when you walk through the door. In hearing stories from a life very different from your own. In discovering shared interests despite decades between you. In celebrating small victories, sharing prayers, and knowing that your presence has become something someone looks forward to.
These moments remind us that meaningful relationships aren't measured by what we accomplish together, but by the care and connection we share.
What God Can Teach Us Through Friendship
Scripture reminds us that serving others is an expression of our love for God.
"Serve one another humbly in love." — Galatians 5:13
When we approach service with humility and an open heart, we make room for God to work not only through us, but within us.
Serving others can teach us patience when things don't go as planned, compassion when we encounter circumstances we don't fully understand, and gratitude for blessings we may have taken for granted.
Older adults have a lifetime of experiences, perspectives, and stories to share. When we take the time to truly listen, we may discover wisdom that challenges us, encouragement that strengthens our faith, and friendships that enrich our own lives.
We may begin by asking God how we can be a blessing to someone else, never imagining how He might use that very relationship to bless us.
The Gift of Showing Up
One of the beautiful things about companionship is that you don't need special talents or extraordinary abilities to make a meaningful contribution.
You don't need to have all the right words, solve someone's problems, or fill every moment with activities. Often, the most valuable thing you can offer is your willingness to consistently show up, be present, and care.
At MyFriend, we've experienced firsthand how these simple moments can grow into genuine friendships. Through hundreds of hours spent visiting seniors, we've shared laughter, tears, prayers, celebrations, and conversations we won't soon forget.
We began this work hoping to bring meaningful companionship into the lives of older adults. Along the way, we've discovered just how much those friendships have enriched our own lives.
And perhaps that's one of the most beautiful things about serving others: love has a way of blessing both the person who gives it and the person who receives it.
Could a Friendship Be Waiting for You?
Somewhere in a senior living community, there may be an older adult who would love to have someone stop by each week, pull up a chair, and simply spend time together.
You may be just the friend they've been hoping for.
And you may discover a friendship you didn't know you needed.
At MyFriend, our volunteer Companions build meaningful, one-on-one friendships with seniors in care communities throughout Fountain Hills, Scottsdale, and surrounding areas. Through consistent weekly visits, we seek to remind older adults that they are seen, valued, and loved.
If you feel called to serve, we invite you to explore becoming a MyFriend Companion. You never know what unexpected blessings God may have waiting for you.
